Attention Seniors

If you have a 3.8 G.P.A. and are interested in attending Amherst College they are having an open house from October 15-17.You will be able to meet students and faculty. Typically, the Admission Office from the college will fund the students transportation.Apply as soon as possible.

If you have a 3.2 G.P.A. and are interested in attending CLU an overnight experience will be offered during October 13-14 and November 10-11.A tour of the campus will be provided as well as sessions.Apply as soon as possible.

If you have a 3.4 G.P.A. and are interested Hamilton College they are having an overnight program during October 2-3 and October 6-7.Participants must maintain a B average in a college preparatory curriculum.Transportation costs will be covered by the college.Apply by September 12.

If you have a 3.4 G.P.A. and are interested in attending Occidental College they are having a Multicultural Visit Program during October 23-25.You will be able to meet new people.Apply by September 15.

If you have a 3.4 G.P.A. and are interested in attending Colby College they are having their Experience Colby Visit Program during October 13-15.You will have a chance to visit the campus and experience the college life.Apply by September 16.

If you have a 3.6 G.P.A. and are interested in attending Barnard College they are having their own Barnard Bound during October 23-24.You will have the opportunity to visit Manhattan and discover more about Barnard.Apply by September 19.

Bates University is offering an opportunity to visit during October 9-11 and November 13-15.Application deadline for October is September 7,2012 and the deadline for November is October 1,2012.

Bowdoin College is offering an opportunity to explore the college during September 20-23 and November 1-4(November 3 is SAT testing date).Application deadline is August 24 for September and September 28 for November.

Bryn Mawr is offering an opportunity to see their campus.Application deadline is September 27.

Carleton College is offering an opportunity to visit the campus on October 25 and October 27.Nomination and invitation process necessary for attending.

Carnegie Mellon University is having their Celebration of Diversity Weekend on November 10-12 and January 19-21.Registration will be available in September.

Colgate University is having their Multicultural Open House in October 21-22.Application deadline is October 5.

University of Vermont is having their program Discovering UVM in October 21-23,28-30 and November 4-6.Application deadline for October is 5 and for October 28-30 is October 26.

Villanova University is having College Day in October 5, application deadline is September 28.They are also offering College Weekend November 16-28.Application deadline November 2.

Wesleyan University is having their Fall Open House in October 8 and November 12.Application deadline for October is September 21 and for November is October 18.

Whitman College is having their Visit Scholarship Program in November 10-12.Application deadline is September 30.

Tips for writing the personal statement

  • Do not wait until the last minute to write your personal statement.
  • Type your first draft and save document so you may make revisions.
  • Read your draft out loud to someone or to yourself and see if each sentence is properly written and properly punctuated.
  • Put your draft aside for 24 to 48 hours and read it again.
  • Make corrections in the sentence construction,grammar,punctuation and spelling, and make an appointment with an English teacher for proofreading.
  • Print your final copy.Make sure it is legible and font size is not too small.Allow someone to proofread for typographical errors you might have missed.

12th Grade College Check List

Fall

o Create a master calendar of deadlines. Include college applications, test registrations and test dates, scholarship applications, housing, and financial deadlines. 
o Look for scholarships one last time. Request any applications you don’t have 
o Last Chance to take the SAT or ACT. REGISTER EARLY! 
o Request college applications, financial aid and housing applications. 
o Make sure your high school transcripts and records are up-to-date. 
o Review your college plans and financial aid preparation . 
o Attend college fairs and financial aid workshops 
o Ask for letters of recommendation from teachers, coaches, and employers. 
o Provide them with a list of your activities/accomplishments and an addressed stamped envelope (see recommendation questionnaire) 
o Finish essays for college applications and scholarships 
o Update your resume 
o Apply ‘Early Decision’ or ‘Early Action’ if you so choose 
o Send in applications to other college choices 
 
Winter
o Gather tax information for the financial aid applications 
o Fill out financial aid forms. Apply for scholarships

o 1-800-4FEDAID

Spring
o Decide on a college and notify the admissions office BY MAY 1st of your acceptance. Notify other colleges who have accepted you that you will not be attending 
o Create a budget to determine your needs. 
o Determine if you need a student loan. File your application. 
o See your doctor for a physical and any necessary vaccinations. 
o Complete your housing and meal applications. 
o Take Advanced Placement Exams. 
o Have your final transcript sent to your college. 
 
Summer
o Notify your college of any scholarships you received. 
o Apply for a summer job. If your financial aid package includes work study, you may be responsible for finding a job at the college. 
o Start your reading assignments for freshman year (if applicable). 
o Take a deep breath. Pack for college!
